What BurnSub is
BurnSub is a free, browser-based tool that burns subtitles into video files. It runs entirely on your device. No video, audio, or subtitle data is uploaded to any server controlled by us. There is no account, no signup, no payment, and no paywalled features.
Free to use, for any lawful purpose
You can use BurnSub for personal projects, commercial work, social media content, client deliverables, or any other lawful purpose. There is no separate "commercial license" because the tool is free for everyone equally.
The only restriction: do not use BurnSub to create content that violates the law in your jurisdiction. That includes content that infringes copyright you do not own, content that constitutes harassment, defamation, or non-consensual intimate imagery, or content that depicts the sexual exploitation of minors. We do not host or moderate your output — but using BurnSub to produce illegal content is your responsibility.
No warranty
BurnSub is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. We do not guarantee that the tool will work for every video, on every device, or for every use case. Browser support, hardware encoding availability, and codec capabilities vary across machines. Specifically:
- Output quality depends on your video source, browser, and chosen settings.
- Whisper-Turbo auto-captioning accuracy varies by audio quality, language, and accent.
- Caption rendering may differ slightly between browsers due to font availability and canvas implementations.
- Hardware-accelerated encoding falls back to software encoding on some systems, which is slower.
If BurnSub produces unexpected output, lost frames, or any other defect, the remedy is to use a different tool. We do not offer refunds because there is nothing to refund.
No liability
We are not liable for any damages — direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or otherwise — arising from your use of BurnSub. This includes lost data, lost time, business interruption, or any creative or commercial outcome of the videos you produce. The tool runs entirely on your machine and we have no visibility into how you use it.
Your content is your content
BurnSub does not claim any rights to videos you process or captions you create. The output is yours. We do not have access to it because nothing leaves your device during processing.
Exception: if you opt in to "Add to Showcase" after exporting a video, a 5-second sample clip is uploaded to our edge storage for public display. This is fully opt-in and clearly indicated. You can request removal anytime via [email protected]. See the privacy policy for details.
Open-source components and third-party services
BurnSub uses several open-source and third-party components. Each is governed by its own license:
- Whisper-Turbo — OpenAI model, MIT license. Used via transformers.js.
- WebCodecs API + WebGPU API — browser-native APIs, governed by your browser's terms.
- Google Analytics 4 — anonymized analytics. Subject to Google's terms.
- Cloudflare Pages — hosting. Subject to Cloudflare's terms.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when material changes occur. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent change. Continued use of BurnSub after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
BurnSub is operated by an individual based in the European Union. These terms are governed by German law and, where applicable, EU regulations including the GDPR. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of German courts, except where mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence applies.
